Dance legend Michael Flatley has opened up about his ongoing cancer battle, crediting his wife, Niamh, as his pillar of strength.
The Lord of the Dance star also hinted at a possible presidential run, reflecting on how his health struggles reshaped his priorities. His emotional tribute to Niamh’s unwavering support has resonated deeply with fans.

In a candid interview, Michael Flatley praised Niamh’s courage during his fight against melanoma, a battle he has faced since 2003. Diagnosed again in 2023, he admits treatment may never fully end. His words painted a moving picture of her resilience.
“Can you imagine the courage of my wife, to put on a smile in that position? The courage that took? That’s a sign from God that he had sent me that angel, and she had that strength. Women are so much stronger than men. They just are.”

The couple, married since 2006, shares a 17-year-old son, Michael St James. Flatley fondly described their bond, calling himself “blessed” for Niamh’s wisdom and support.
“I know how lucky I am. God was certainly smiling on me when Niamh said ‘yes.’”
Flatley’s health journey has fueled his desire to serve Ireland. An affidavit confirming his intent to seek a presidential nomination was recently filed, though he remained coy about final plans.
“It will be very difficult for anyone to fill the shoes of Michael D Higgins, a man who has served this nation with wisdom and profound compassion.”
He emphasized his decades of promoting Irish culture globally and a renewed drive to contribute more.
“After my last cancer journey, I realised that life is short and I need to do more—more with my family and more for the country that I love.”
If he runs, he’ll face contenders like former EU commissioner Mairead McGuinness and ex-Mayor of Galway Catherine Connolly.
